Monuments straddle the threshold between art and politics. For centuries, this art has been used to enhance the glory of nations and their great leaders. The statues of Lenin, Hitler, Mao or Stalin are part of the collective memory. Their sculptures are tangible representations of political regimes, specific historical eras and ideologies. In his installative performance, theater maker Julian Hetzel questions rights, traditions, privileges, wealth and totalitarian ideas - aspects that every postcolonial society carries with it. He takes us on a factory tour, a journey that confronts us with our own ideologies. The clash of the static past and the fluid present creates a productive friction in this industrial environment that raises a lot of dust.

In Mount Average, Julian Hetzel explores the question of how we can deal with the past, with ideologies that are set in stone. In his works, he repeatedly seeks proximity to the visual arts. This enables him and his performers - the actresses Kristien De Proost and Jana De Kockere as well as the Congolese theater maker and rapper Pitcho Womba Conga - to work together with the audience on the material, to make it more mobile, more flexible. According to the motto "Powder from Power", power is to be turned into powder in order to create something new from it again. An ongoing process of construction and deconstruction, of doing and not doing, of finding and letting go: It's all in our hands!

"We want to make the monuments tangible again. We want them to become material from which a future can be shaped, instead of being gods that are sacred. Then you don't have to be afraid of them anymore and make them disappear."

- Julian Hetzel
